Bees normally don't venture further than two kilometers when foraging so if the new site is far away they won't go back to the old site. If you move them just across the garden however you'll lose all the foragers as they'll sit around where the hive used to be and be confused. My grandfather recently trecked his bees from Devon (South of England) to Manchester (North). I was very impressed to learn that as long as you move them far enough away from their old hive site that they don't recognise the area they take the move quite well.
