Martin; Well, we could leave them in the hive to hatch, but putting them in an incubator gives us a little more control. For instance it's guaranteed that the old queen (the one that's in the hive which nursed the larvae) can't sting them to death! Since we need to take them out to put cages over the capped cells in any case (otherwise the newborn queens would disappear into the hive and eventually kill each other until there's just the one left, and that would render the whole procedure pointless), putting them back into the hive seems unnecessary if you have an incubator.

And if you left them in room temperature they'd die; the pupae need a constant temperature of about 34 centigrade to develop properly.

"When they are old enough to be capped, we take them out of the hive, put a small cage around each capped cell, and put them in an incubator."

Why is this step necessary?

Thanks guys! I'm sure there'll be more posts about the intricacies of beekeeping as well as bee biology in the future, as after all a fresh season is about to begin. :) It's not yet time to look into the hives to see if they made it through the winter, but soon!
